ALPA Canada Congratulates Mark Carney on Being Elected Canada’s Prime Minister
Captain Tim Perry, President of the Air Line Pilots Association, Int’l (ALPA) Canada, today issued the following statement after the election of Mark Carney as Canada’s prime minister.
OTTAWA, ONT.—Captain Tim Perry, President of the Air Line Pilots Association, Int’l (ALPA) Canada, today issued the following statement after the election of Mark Carney as Canada’s prime minister:
“As the voice of Canada's piloting profession, ALPA Canada looks forward to collaborating with Prime Minister Carney and his soon-to-be-appointed Cabinet.
“As part of the world’s largest nongovernmental aviation safety organization, we will promote aviation safety and work to advance the fundamental rights of both our own members and employees across the country.
“ALPA Canada continues to establish solid working relationships with all parliamentarians to promote a pilot-partisan agenda. That work will continue with this newly elected government.
“Our message remains consistent and is clear: Canada’s professional pilots will not stand for any attempt to weaken or suspend pilot fatigue regulations by commercial operators. We are calling on the newly elected government to ensure ALPA Canada—an aviation stakeholder—is part of any future discussions on Canada’s aviation regulatory framework and the implementation of any aviation-specific policies.
"We are also seeking reforms to the Temporary Foreign Worker Program to include consultation with the unions that represent employees impacted by the hiring of foreign workers.
“We will also continue to advocate in the strongest terms for safeguarding the collective bargaining process and preventing government intervention into it. We believe it is in the best interest of all parties to reach collective agreements at the bargaining table without government interference.”
Founded in 1931, ALPA is the largest airline pilot union in the world and represents more than 79,000 pilots at 42 U.S. and Canadian airlines. Visit ALPA.org or follow us on Twitter @ALPAPilots.
