OTTAWA, ONT.—Captain Tim Perry, President of the Air Line Pilots Association, Int’l (ALPA) Canada, today issued the following statement after the swearing-in of Mark Carney as Canada’s next Prime Minister and the appointment of his cabinet:

“As part of the world’s largest nongovernmental aviation safety organization, ALPA Canada looks forward to working with Prime Minister Carney, the newly appointed Minister of Transport Chrystia Freeland and the Minister of Jobs and Families Steven MacKinnon, as we continue our focus on aviation safety and advancing the fundamental rights of employees, including pilots.

“ALPA Canada will continue its work to establish solid working relationships with all parliamentarians to promote a pilot-partisan agenda. We look forward to meeting with Canada’s newest ministers of transport and jobs and families to make our priorities known.

“Our message will be clear: we vehemently oppose any attempt to weaken or suspend pilot fatigue regulations by commercial operators and encourage Canada’s new government leaders to ensure ALPA Canada is part of any future discussions on Canada’s aviation regulatory framework and the implementation of any aviation-specific policies.

“We will also continue to advocate in the strongest terms to safeguard the collective bargaining process and work to prevent government intervention into it, as we believe it is in the best interests of all to reach collective agreements at the bargaining table without government interference.”

Founded in 1931, ALPA is the largest airline pilot union in the world and represents more than 79,000 pilots at 42 U.S. and Canadian airlines. Visit ALPA.org or follow us on Twitter @ALPAPilots
