Spirit Airlines Pilots Respond to Company’s Emergence from Chapter 11 Bankruptcy

Mar 12, 2025

FT. LAUDERDALE, FLA.—Capt. Ryan Muller, chair of the Spirit Airlines Master Executive Council (MEC) of the Air Line Pilots Association, Int’l (ALPA), issued the following statement in response to Spirit Airlines’ emergence from Chapter 11 bankruptcy, nearly four months after its November 18, 2024, filing in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York:

“Today, Spirit Airlines has officially emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy. On behalf of the Master Executive Council, I extend my deepest gratitude to our pilots for their professionalism and resilience throughout this period of uncertainty. Their unwavering commitment to safety, efficiency, and reliability has been the foundation of this airline during one of the most challenging times in its history.

"While the financial restructuring process is now complete, restoring workforce confidence must be management's immediate priority. Spirit pilots are the backbone of this airline, and despite the turbulence of the recent past, we have remained dedicated to keeping this operation moving forward. As Spirit looks ahead, we expect management to focus on long-term stability—honoring our Collective Bargaining Agreement, investing in our people, and providing a clear vision for fleet and network growth.

"Equally important, executive leadership must communicate a credible and transparent path to restoring profitability that does not come at any further expense to our pilot group. Our pilots have already endured significant sacrifices—including the furlough of 164 of our pilots in September 2024 and the more recent furlough of 194 pilots in January 2025. This must not be overlooked as the Company moves into this next phase.

"The MEC looks forward to working with Spirit's executive leadership team to ensure the Company's next chapter is built on strength, reliability, and mutual success. While we are committed to collaborating toward a future of stability and growth, we will remain steadfast in defending our contract and protecting our pilots' interests. Our focus will be on ensuring career stability and creating a sustainable path for the pilots who will help shape Spirit's future."
