Safe Resolution of Engine Fire Event Underscores Critical Role FedEx Pilots Play

Mar 05, 2025

MEMPHIS, Tenn.—On Saturday morning, a FedEx cargo plane departing from Newark Liberty International Airport encountered a bird strike shortly after takeoff, resulting in an engine fire. Demonstrating exceptional skill and composure, the FedEx pilots safely executed an emergency landing back at Newark, with no injuries reported among the crew.

“This incident underscores the unwavering professionalism and expertise of FedEx pilots, who consistently rise to the occasion in the face of unforeseen challenges,” said Capt. Jose Nieves, chair of the FedEx Master Executive Council. “Their commitment to safety and operational excellence ensures the reliability of FedEx services worldwide.”

FedEx pilots have long demonstrated remarkable professionalism and piloting expertise during critical situations. In February 2023, a FedEx crew averted a near-collision at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport—narrowly avoiding impact with a Southwest Airlines plane on the runway—due to their training and quick decision-making. Later that year, in October, a FedEx Boeing 757 made a successful landing at Chattanooga Airport after its landing gear failed to deploy—a testament to the pilots’ adept handling of in-flight emergencies. Beyond these high-profile incidents, FedEx pilots also navigate complex operations in some of the world’s most remote locations. In October 2024, a FedEx flight from Anchorage to Hanoi diverted to Shemya Eareckson Air Station after experiencing an engine failure over the North Pacific, reflecting the pilots' ability to manage emergencies in challenging environments.

These crews exemplify the talent, professionalism, and dedication to safety for which FedEx pilots are known globally. They demonstrated significant operational resilience during the COVID-19 pandemic response that saved many lives and managed a subsequent system form and culture change resulting from the implementation of a new corporate business strategy.

“I applaud our pilots’ actions. This incident once again highlights why the most crucial factor in aviation safety is having two highly trained and qualified pilots on the flight deck,” Nieves added.
