ALPA Underscores Aviation Safety as Recent Events Raise Questions

McLean, Va.—As recent safety incidents have drawn increased attention to aviation safety, Capt. Jason Ambrosi, president of the Air Line Pilots Association, Int'l (ALPA), issued the following statement:

“As aviation safety continues to be heavily scrutinized in the wake of recent events, it's important to note that as commercial airline pilots, we are the final line of defense in ensuring the safety of our flights.

“Time and time again, the presence of at least two highly trained and well-rested pilots on every commercial airline flight deck is a major reason why air travel remains the safest form of transportation.

“The human element of pilots working together on the flight deck is irreplaceable. The split-second decisions and coordination of two pilots have repeatedly prevented potential incidents from becoming tragedies.

“However, we know our work to advance aviation safety never stops, and as our industry continues to move forward following recent events, it's more important than ever for everyone operating in our national airspace to be vigilant and get back to basics. Everyone plays a role in ensuring aviation remains the safest form of transportation. Each stakeholder—from flight crews to controllers to ground crew—must have the training, resources, and rest needed to perform their jobs effectively.

“Airline pilots are more than ready to transport passengers safely to their destinations. While pilots work every day to mitigate delays, safety is always our number one priority.”
