FedEx Pilots Picket in Memphis

MEMPHIS—FedEx Express pilots, represented by the Air Line Pilots Association, Int’l (ALPA) held an informational picket in Memphis today ahead of the release of FedEx’s fiscal third-quarter earnings. Standing shoulder to shoulder in front of FedEx Corporation’s executive headquarters on Shady Grove Road, the pilots demonstrated their frustrations with the lack of a new contract.

ALPA and FedEx management began negotiations in May 2021 and entered into mediation in October 2022 with the assistance of the National Mediation Board. Following a rejected tentative agreement in July 2023, the FedEx pilots clearly expressed their requirements for an agreement that would meet their expectations. As a result, on March 8, 2024, on behalf of the FedEx pilots, ALPA president Capt. Jason Ambrosi formally requested that the National Mediation Board issue a proffer of arbitration and a consequent release for self-help.

“With minimal progress achieved during recent mediated negotiating sessions in sections of significant importance to the pilots and no progress on the core economic sections related to retirement and pay, management forced our hand in requesting a release from mediation,” said First Officer Connor Wilm, acting chair of the FedEx Master Executive Council. “Management continues to insist that any new agreement must be cost-neutral with respect to the rejected tentative agreement. This approach will not be accepted by FedEx pilots and will not lead to an agreement that will be ratified by our pilots.”  

FedEx management has repeatedly demonstrated that stalling and delaying is a preferred tactic in their negotiating toolbox. FedEx pilots will no longer accept this tactic, and informational picketing events like the one held today will continue to increase in frequency, along with additional public displays of unity and resolve.
