ALPA Canada Launches FTDT Task Force
Calls on Government to Collaborate to Make Canada’s Skies Safer
OTTAWA, ON.—Pilot leaders and aviation safety experts from the Air Line Pilots Association, Int’l Canada (ALPA Canada) convened in Toronto yesterday for the inaugural meeting of the ALPA Canada Flight and Duty Time Task Force.
“When the updated flight- and duty-time regulations were announced in 2018, we felt confident that the regulations were a significant improvement over what previously existed, despite the fact that they did not address all of our concerns and recommendations,” said Capt. Tim Perry, ALPA Canada president. “When we supported these enhanced safety regulations, we were given assurances that implementing the new regulations would lead to an improved working relationship between Transport Canada and aviation sector stakeholders, such as ALPA Canada. Unfortunately, this has not been the case.”
The primary objective of the task force is to compose a report on the state of pilot fatigue in Canada as related to the fair application of Canada’s flight- and duty-time regulations and to formalize procedures for identifying and addressing ongoing safety issues. ALPA’s Task Force will work to institute a truly collaborative relationship that brings pilot representatives to the table with Transport Canada officials and air operators for a more productive dialogue to clarify the regulations and revise guidance material.
Founded in 1931, ALPA is the largest airline pilot union in the world and represents more than 77,000 pilots at 42 U.S. and Canadian airlines. Visit the ALPA Canada website at alpacanada.ca or follow us on Twitter @ALPACanada.
