Airlines and the Environment
Passengers, businesses, stockholders, regulators, and the general public expect airlines to be environmentally responsible. Commercial airline flying, which is the safest means of transportation, contributes only about 2 percent of the carbon emissions attributable to human activity, despite the industry’s huge contributions to the global economy, and efforts are underway to further reduce aviation’s overall environmental impact, while enhancing its economic viability.
