FAA Reauthorization, Examining the Current and Future Challenges Facing the Aerospace Workforce
In his April 2023 testimony before the House Aviation Subcommittee, Capt. Jason Ambrosi, president of the Air Line Pilots Association, credited Congress with saving U.S. aviation jobs through the Payroll Support Program and improving safety with stronger training standards established after past fatal accidents. He stressed that the U.S. currently has more than enough qualified pilots, and recent training backlogs stem from airlines’ pandemic-era decisions rather than a shortage. Capt. Ambrosi urged lawmakers not to weaken safety standards but instead to strengthen the pilot pipeline by expanding student loan access, supporting minority-serving institutions, funding workforce grants, and making the Women in Aviation Advisory Board permanent. He also called for reforms to the Essential Air Service program to sustain small-community air access while preserving America’s high safety standards.
