More than 500 collegiate-aged aviators from 30 different aviation schools gathered on May 12–17 at Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh, Wisc., for a week of spirited competition, educational sessions, and professional networking at the National Intercollegiate Flying Association’s (NIFA) 2025 SAFECON.

The competition, which ALPA proudly sponsors, consists of flight and ground events designed to promote aviation safety and instill professionalism in the next generation of airline pilots. Despite several windy days and severe weather conditions in the evenings, nearly all the events took place.

Throughout the week, Education Committee members Capt. Fred Kopec (Delta) and Capt. Jeffrey Gilbert (Endeavor Air) staffed a booth to connect with students between events and hosted an evening pizza forum to answer questions about the profession. Students expressed excitement in getting to talk with professional airline pilots and actively sought career advice. They also participated in a building competition using ALPA-branded materials while waiting for the weather to clear.

In addition, the Association awarded scholarships to the regional and national top pilots. Taking home the national Top Pilot Award was Matthew Cleveland, a student at the University of North Dakota. Regional winners included Jack Tregellas, United States Air Force Academy; Matthew Anderson, California Aeronautical University; Daniel Souppa, Western Michigan University; Landon Clark, Southeastern Oklahoma State University; Taylon Haecker, University of North Dakota; Samuel Budoff, United States Military Academy; Ryan Agan, Purdue University; Bo Barlow, Auburn University; and Zeke Erickson, Liberty University.
