Canadian North at a Glance

The Scheduling Committee has been working diligently to enforce and educate the pilot group regarding its joint collective agreement. The Safety Committee has completed training in safety, accident investigation, and flight data monitoring and attended ALPA's 2024 Air Safety Forum. The Hotel Committee has been reviewing all hotel and staff housing accommodations and adding them into the ALPA app as a resource for all Canadian North pilots on layovers. The Grievance Committee successfully resolved numerous grievances in 2024, and the MEC continues work to enforce the current contract and Canadian Labour Code. The Negotiating Committee has been working with the MEC on contract enforcement and to negotiate several new letters of understanding, including a mid-year pay increase, modifications to reassignment language, and expanded overtime opportunities.

Canadian North Pilots Prepare for Contract Negotiations

Canadian North pilots have been diligently preparing for their upcoming January 2026 contract negotiations. This effort has been a collective endeavour, with the pilot group working tirelessly to strengthen its position at the bargaining table.

The pilots' Master Executive Council (MEC) has been instrumental in building unity through strong and consistent communications, tapping F/O Sarah Vaughan as the Communications Committee chair. Supported by ALPA staff, she successfully coordinates the flow of information between ALPA national, MEC leaders and committees, and the pilots, ensuring everyone remains well informed and unified.

At the end of 2024, the MEC signed two letters of agreement. One modified reassignment rules to clarify how pilots may be reassigned to new duties, and the other expanded opportunities for voluntary overtime.

In January, the pilot group was scheduled to hold MEC officer elections with all Canadian North pilots in good standing able to participate by running for office or supporting their peers. Together, they're forging a stronger and more unified pilot group.

From COVID-19 lockdowns, travel restrictions, and the rapidly changing economic reality of our industry, our JNC undertook the mammoth task of evaluating and comparing existing agreements and expectations to create a new collective agreement that is industry-leading and will benefit all pilots of the new, unified group.
