The ALPA Air Safety Organization (ASO) spearheads the Association's efforts as the world's largest nongovernmental aviation safety organization. We advance safety and security, shape industry standards, and strengthen the future of air travel.

Leading the Way in Aviation Safety & Security

Since ALPA's founding in 1931, our mission has centered on improving air safety. Today, the ASO continues that critical work in the areas of safety, security, pilot assistance, and jumpseat. With more than 450 pilot volunteers backed by a team of professional staff, the ASO works every day to make air travel the safest mode of transportation.

What Does the ASO Do?

Through the combined expertise and experience of our pilot volunteers and ALPA staff, we strengthen aviation and support the people who make it possible in the following ways:

  • We promote and champion aviation safety by improving training, crew management, human factors, and operational practices across the airline industry.
  • We advocate for pilots in industry-wide discussions that help shape regulations, procedures, and new technologies.
  • We provide independent analysis and expertise through aeronautical engineers and safety specialists.
  • We represent the collective interests of pilots before government agencies, regulators, and international aviation organizations.
  • We support pilot well-being by providing resources and programs that promote health, resilience, and professionalism.

Four Pillars of the ASO

The ASO’s work is organized into four core pillars:

  • Safety: Improving aircraft operations, airport environments, training standards, and accident prevention.
  • Security: Enhancing protections against aviation threats through close industry and government collaboration.
  • Pilot Assistance: Supporting pilots’ health, well-being, and professional performance.
  • Jumpseat: Preserving and protecting access to the flight deck jumpseat.
